The National Theatre "Ivan Vazov" is a cornerstone of Bulgarian culture and a must-see attraction for visitors to Sofia. Established in 1904, it is the oldest and most prominent theater in the country, named after Bulgaria's celebrated writer, Ivan Vazov.

The theater’s building is a masterpiece of neoclassical architecture, designed by Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer. Completed in 1906 and officially opened on January 3, 1907, the façade captivates with its elegance, adorned with mythological figures, including the statue of Apollo driving a chariot drawn by four horses.

Over the years, the theater has endured numerous challenges, including a devastating fire in 1923 and bombings during World War II. Despite these hardships, it has been restored and renovated multiple times, maintaining its status as a leading cultural institution.

Today, the National Theatre "Ivan Vazov" offers a diverse repertoire of classical and contemporary performances, attracting audiences from all walks of life. It features three stages: the main hall with 750 seats, a smaller stage with 120 seats, and an additional stage on the fourth floor with 70 seats. These spaces host some of the finest Bulgarian and international theatrical productions.

Situated in the heart of Sofia, with its grand façade facing the City Garden, the theater is easily accessible and a favorite spot for both locals and tourists. Visitors can enjoy a captivating performance or simply marvel at the building’s architectural beauty, which is featured on the reverse side of the Bulgarian 50-lev banknote issued in 1999 and 2006.
